The first meeting of the Permanent Working Group founded by Justice Minister Nela Kuburović for the improvement of the criminal law protection of attorneys and an overall analysis of the position of attorneys in Serbia, was held today at the Bar Association of Serbia. Aside the Justice Minister, the Group comprises representatives of the attorneys’ profession, the Republic Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Interior and the High Court of Cassation.

At today’s meeting, members of the Working Group were informed of the actions taken by the competent state organs for solving the murder of attorney Dragoslav Ognjanović. Although the Republic Prosecutor’s Office had submitted information about the number and the stages of criminal cases involving attorneys as plaintiffs to the Bar Association at the beginning of 2017, the members of the Working Group agreed to contact the Republic Prosecutor’s Office again to obtain the latest information and statistics. Discussing the criminal law protection of attorneys, the members of the Working Group noted that the information was necessary so that possible amendments to the existing legislative framework or the introduction of new criminal offences could be determined.

In addition to the above, the members of the Working Group adopted a methodology of their future work and agreed to hold regular weekly meetings.
