Today, Minister of Justice Nela Kuburović welcomed the former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), now Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) Serge Brammertz with whom she discussed Serbia’s thus far cooperation with the Mechanism. Minister Kuburović and Prosecutor Brammertz were of the opinion that the cooperation was continuous and on a good level.

On the subject of the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor’s capacity-building, the Minister noted that two new deputy prosecutors had been appointed, that two more were being transferred from other prosecutor’s offices and  that the procedure of recruiting three new deputies was on-going. She added that the number of prosecutorial assistants and administrative staff had been increased, announcing that office space would increase in the course of the following year so to ensure all staff work under suitable conditions.

As part of the Mechanism Office of the Prosecutor’s support to Serbia, Brammertz said that training for prosecutors working on war crimes cases would be organised in March 2019 in cooperation with the Judicial Academy. The training is to enable the prosecutors gain deeper knowledge of the field and Prosecutor Brammertz will be one of the trainers.

Brammertz’s visit to Serbia was part of his preparations to present the Mechanism’s Annual Report in the Security Council in New York.
