Today, Minister of Justice Nela Kuburović met with the former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, now Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) Serge Brammertz who was on his regular visit to Serbia to present the 6-month report of the IRMCT.

Brammertz commended the organisation of the 3-day regional meeting of war crimes prosecutors which was being held in Belgrade after several years. He again emphasised the importance of cooperation in effective war crimes prosecution between the countries.

Brammertz and Kuburović concurred that positive progress in said cooperation between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina had been made, which however lacked in the cooperation with Croatia.

Discussing the work of Serbia’s Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor (OWCP), Brammertz noted the insufficient number of new indictments.

The Minister stressed that Chapter 23 Action Plan was undergoing revision so that all activities defined in the National Strategy for War Crimes Prosecution would be incorporated, effectively imposing the obligation to implement the Strategy measures and thus giving them greater importance.

Brammertz positively assessed the training for deputy war crimes prosecutors which was organised by the Judicial Academy with the support of the IRMCT Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), with the aim of strengthening the OWCP capacity and resources.

The Minister and the Prosecutor also discussed Serbia’s future cooperation with the IRMCT OTP and the IRMCT’s following 6-month report.
